Auto insurance protects you against financial
loss, if you have an accident. The policy provides coverage for
your vehicle, your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury
or property damage, and medical coverage for the cost of treating
injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.
Furthermore, additional discounts are available through several
companies if you write your homeowners/renter and auto policy together
with the same company.
For an outline of the coverages offered on Massachusetts
personal automobile policies, please see the breakdown of the insurance
policy below:
Every Auto policy in Massachusetts has the
following Compulsory Coverages:
Part 1: BODILY INJURY TO OTHERS: Limits are written
with the first limit per person and the second limit per accident
for the liability of bodily injury to others (except guest passengers).
Part 2: PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION: Pays for lost
wages (at 75%) and Medical Expenses. (This does not apply to motorcycle
coverage).
Part 3: UNINSURED MOTORISTS: This offers protection
to you for bodily injury caused by an owner/operator of an Uninsured
Vehicle, with a first limit per person and the second limit per
accident.
Part 4: PROPERTY DAMAGE: This covers your liability
for damage to property of others caused by your car or one driven
by you, or a household member.
On each of our policies, we recommend that
you consider including the following Optional Coverages:
Part 5: OPTIONAL BODILY INJURY TO OTHERS: This covers
your legal liability for bodily injury or death to others caused
by your car or one driven by you, driving in the US or Canada (and
nowhere else, call me if you need it in any other countries). This
is the largest area for lawsuits and awards.
Part 6: MEDICAL PAYMENTS: This provides coverage
for medical expense reimbursement for you or your passengers, when
in the vehicle, or when struck by another vehicle. You do not need
to sue or be sued for this coverage to apply.
Part 7: COLLISION: This provides coverage to the
insured auto caused by collision or upset.
Part 9: COMPREHENSIVE: This provides coverage when
damage is caused by something other than collision, such as fire,
theft or vandalism. Damage to glass is provided under this optional
coverage.
Part 10: RENTAL: This covers reimbursement for auto
rental expense (due to an accident), up to $15 per day (or optionally
$30 or $100 per day). You must buy Collision coverage to have this
optional coverage on the policy.
Part 11: TOWING AND LABOR: This provides coverage
for towing an emergency repair to your vehicle, up to $25 or $50
per disablement. You must buy Collision coverage to have this optional
coverage on your policy.
Part 12: UNDERINSURED MOTORIST: This provides
coverage for bodily injury to you, caused by an insured vehicle,
to the extent your coverage exceeds their coverage. |
